Private House in Berlin by David Chippervield Architect

August 11, 2013 Architecture, Home Design

Private House, designed by David Chippervield Architect, located in Berlin, Germany. This house, organized around a south facing courtyard overlooking a large rear garden, is situated in a leafy suburb in the sout west of Berlin. Although designed to reveal distinct sequence of rooms and to forge a clear relationship between inside and outside space, it was the building’s material that became the foremost determining element in the architecture. Enveloped entirely in brick, this skin lent the house a physical solidity reminiscent of the early modernist houses of Erich Mendelsohn and Mies vander Rohe. The irregularity of this textured, hand-make brick finish also effect a powerful contrast with the smoothness and regularity of the steel-framed glazing, so that the house really expresses differences in its own materiality.
