Centro Towers, the Skyhome Expression, designed by Hotson Bakker Architect. Located in Richmond, BC, Kanada. Aiming to reinvigorate the tower form by inventing a new kind of housing, the “skyhome”, Centro takes advantage of the quality of life present in townhouse living. The skyhome expression includes multi-foor space applied to a vertically stacked form and is organized with the lowest (soft) wood edge at the base, an intermediate darker band and a light metal and glass expression at the top. Private Residence in Kanada, Beautiful Home designed by Hotson Bakker Architect. The design approach to address old and new was to break the two with a transpar-ent ‘joint’ or ‘knuckle’ – the outcome is the “grand window.” Programmatically, the new staircase became the ideal location for this transition, where the homeowners can glimpse this relationship from the inside as they ascend to the second ?oor. The open space concept is further supported by the glass ?oor, which both shares light and emphasizes contrast between the more traditionally partitioned portion of the existing home. Bright colours and the homeowner’s artwork helped accentuate the materials and lighting.

Mole Hill Housing, the Green housing design, designed by Hotson Bakker Architect. Located in Vancouver, BC, Kanada.
The Mole Hill Housing block, situated in the middle of one of the highest density neighborhoods and hottest housing markets in North America, had been under the threat of demolition for more than 50 years. Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden, in conjunction with S.R. McEwen Associated Architects, transformed the 26 city owned heritage homes into affordable housing, while maintaining the historic nature of the buildings on the site.

The combination of steel and concrete offset with open, airy spaces creates a unique residence with a distinct Pacific Northwest feel. The home is characterized by many environmental features such as passive solar design, a clerestorey venting system and use of local materials. Devil’s Lake Residence, Contemporary Beach House was designed by Nathan Good Architect. Privacy was a key consideration for this waterfront home overlooking Devil’s Lake near Lincoln City, Oregon. The owners requested a residence that combined their preferences for both agrarian and contemporary design. The design solution incorporated a small building footprint and created a comfortable, light-filled home through maximized daylighting and carefully selected views. Green features include hydronic radiant-heated floors; energy efficient lighting, controls and appliances; natural cross ventilation design; non-toxic materials; a central vacuum system for enhanced indoor air quality; sustainably harvested Lyptus for cabinetry, and polished concrete floors.
