Mann House Design by Fernau and Hartman Architct

July 10, 2013 By: archinhome Category: Architecture, Home Design

Mann House, Design by Fernau and Hartman Architct. On a ridge in Sonoma County, the Mann House commands a 360-degree view of surrounding vineyards and mountains beyond. It is a primary residence for a family of three. The main house is a series of interconnecting spaces each borrowing from the other, allowing it to be relatively modest, yet retain privacy. For the work-at-home couple—he is a writer, she is an artist—this is important. To the L-shaped plan of the house, we added an outbuilding to define the courtyard space. This building, which splits in to become a studio and guest-room, makes a second L-shaped piece. The two interlocking “L’s” creates a series of varied outdoor areas that crop and edit adjacent views.

Dow House, by Fernau and Hartman Architct

Dow House, designed by Fernau and Hartman Architct. Located on a southwestern slope with specimen oaks and views to California’s coastal range, this primary residence is designed to adapt to the changing needs of a growing family and to engage its owners in a dialogue between traditional and modern formal and material strategies. Sited just below a ridge, the house is organized under a large shed roof that wraps the slope and shapes an entry court. It is punctuated by various dormers for light, views, and headroom. The fluid plan and open trusses shape a great room that encompasses the central activities of family life. Two major wings interrupt this dominant shed: the children’s wing—a gabled roof and traditional detailing, and the parents’ retreat—a two-story modernist shed.

Caperton House Design in West Virginia

July 09, 2013 By: archinhome Category: Architecture, Home Design

Designed by Fernau and Hartman Architct, located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, the site of the Caperton House transitions from rural road, across open meadow, to dense deciduous forest—where a south-facing promontory commands the Potomac River. Both rural retreat and gathering place, the house engages visitors with the site, the river, and the distant ridges. while including gallery space for a collection of West Virginia art. The building deploys local traditions, materials, craftsmanship, and practice. Local masons built the limestone ‘arms’ with native stone, local timber framers used state-grown oak, and a combination of metal and wood siding reflects indigenous building practice. The colorful palette ameliorates the bleakness of winter and helps buildings recede into the landscape the rest of the year.

Anderson Ayers House by Fernau and Hartman Architct

July 06, 2013 By: archinhome Category: Architecture, Home Design

Designed by Fernau and Hartman Architct. A second home for a dramatist, a writer and their son, this house provides areas in which to “stage” the activities of daily life. The main space, a barrel vaulted “bar,” cuts across the slope and steps along its length, creating the rake of a theater and establishing the central common space as a stage, with kitchen and master bedroom occupying stage right and stage left. The barrel roof is the structure around which the building’s other elements improvise. We adapted two primary siting strategies: to straddle a wind-blown, tree-covered rock outcropping, and to dig the house into the hill. At one end the house disappears into the grade, and at the other it gestures out, affording views to the landscape beyond.
