In June of 2009, TOKEN was approached to design and fabricate a custom leather floor covering. During our first visit to the site, the scope of our proposal quickly increased to include custom furniture and fixtures throughout the client’s 2200 sq ft. Bowery loft. Drawing inspiration from the rugged black buffalo leather selected as the material for the floor covering in the master bedroom, we proposed designs for a collection of visually bold and graphic pieces in white oak, blackened steel, Richlite and buffalo leather. In the master bedroom the pieces include a built-in dresser, two side tables, headboard and overhead shelving with ship ladder access. For the guest room we selected a desk from the TOKENnyc Collection. In the living room we provided designs for an overhead shelving system with library ladder to match the system in the master bedroom, a custom DJ station and 5 bar stools also from the TOKENnyc collection. Please visit TOKEN site for further information.
Description from TOKEN :
This Townhouse is designed by David Chipperfield Architects, located in Berlin, Germany.
Within the tight restrictions of a deep and narrow lot, the house achieves generosity through room height. The qualities of natural light and space are more important than the optimisation of surface area and flexibility. The location of the staircase on the facade, unusual for a townhouse, highlights the significance of the vertical aspect of the project. While from a material point of view, the facade is almost passive, the composition of vertical cuboids with glazed fronts creates depth and a sculptural quality.
David Chipperfield Architects has completed the Townhouse O-10 in Berlin. The building is in the new district of ‘Friedrichswerder’ which is emerging between Werderstraße and Leipziger Straße, Oberwall-, Niederwallstraße and Kurstraße. Historic areas of urban development such as England’s noted townhouse settlements of the last two centuries have served as inspiration for the new district.
